Hookah History

The hookah, also known as nargile, argeela, or hubble bubble is an oriental water-pipe used for smoking tobacco. Hookah has a long past and has been around for thousands of years. The hookah initially originated from the North Eastern and Western provinces of India, around modern day Afghanistan and China. At that time, the hookah was used for smoking opium, hashish, tobacco, dried fruits, and herbs. The original hookah was very simplistic in its design; the body and the hose were hand crafted with wood and the base was made of coconut shells. As the hookah spread around the world, so did its design, name, and use. When it reached the Persian Empire, the Persians coined the term ‘Nargile,’ which means ‘Coconut’ in Persian. With the nargile, the Persians smoked a dark tobacco known as “Tombeik,” which would be soaked and packed into a large bowl, known as the “Ghalune.” They would then place charcoal on top of the wet tobacco- giving it a strong flavor, and distinct aroma. When the hookah reached the Ottoman Empire (modern day Turkey), the Hookah was named ‘Argeela,’ and re-fashioned into brass, metals, and glass. The Turkish hookahs were very similar to the modern day hookahs- they were larger, stronger, and more beautiful in design- not to mention, they lasted a lot longer than the coconut hookah’s. The designs were painted on the glass, and crafted into the metals giving the hookah a touch of exotic art and beauty. The renovated hookah’s changed the culture of Hookah smoking- the Turkish developed hookah bar’s as well; and music, belly-dancing, and social interaction was associated with the hookah culture. The Turkish also developed flavored tobaccos, known as “Naklia Shisha;” similar to today’s hookah tobacco. The Turkish made the naklia shisha with a mixture of honey molasses, dried fruits, and foreign tobacco. The tobacco changed the face of the Hookah- people enjoyed the flavors and the aromas; and no longer did it become associated with its drug-abusing past- it became a tobacco smoking product. When the hookah reached Europe and the Americas in the 17th and 18th centuries- the culture came with it. The Europeans and the Americans named the hookah the “Hubble Bubble.” They appreciated its attractive designs, its appetizing tobacco flavors, and its tranquil culture. Today, many people regard the hookah as an enjoyable, relaxing, and social object; which can be used any time, either for social gatherings or for leisure. The hookah has a long history- and a long future. The hookah is something that will never fade from humanity.
